At noon, a dozen activists gathered in downtown
Central and marched to the British Embassy in Hong
Kong. They were protesting against the British
Government suppression of the anti-capitalist
demonstrators in London.
The group of April 5 Action and Anti-Unemployment &
Anti-Poverty Alliance activists resonated the slogans of
the demonstrators of the three cities yesterday. "Cancel
the debts of the 3rd World Countries", "Shame on the
British Government", "G7 are blood suckers", "Down
with Blair", "No to exploitation of 3rd World
Countries"...
Outside the British Embassy, Leung Kwok-hung, the
spokesperson of the group read a statement denouncing
the G7 Summit doing too little, too late to alleviate the
burden and tragedy of the working people in developing
countries. He also denounced the hypocritical move of
the summit leaders for merely canceling 2.8% of the
debts owed by nearly 160 countries while institutions
associated with the Summit, like IMF and World Bank
forced austerity measures down the throats of the poor
nations, creating massive retrenchment and misery all
over the world.
The group demanded that all the debts should be
cancelled at once. They also denounced the British
Government for suppressing the demonstration in
London and demanded that those arrested should be
released immediately.
The activists then burned placards with the photos of the
US President, the British Prime Minister, the German
Chancellor and the Union Jack. The police tried to
intervene but no scuffle took place and the group
disbanded peacefully after singing the Internationale.
