Police Decline to Press Charges Against Protesters

- Reprint from Hong Kong Voice of Democracy

June 6, 1998

Six protesters who staged a protest at the last meeting of the Provisional
Legislature on April 8 1998 are told that the police has decided not to
press charges against them.

The protesters, including Leung Kwok Hung, Cheng Ki-kin, and others
chanted slogans "The Provisional Legislature will not die in peace" and "The
Provisional Legislature is a product of money politics" at the meeting and
were arrested later.

Leung Kwok Hung, spokesperson of the group, said that the decision not
to press charges against them is a political one. He cited examples of similar
protests last year in which protesters were charged for disrupting the
legislature by holding banners and chanting slogans. He noted that the
legislature has a very bad image and any further charges against the
protesters will aggravate its public image.
