Chris Ng Kung-siu, of the People's Constitutionalist Society, passed away this morning after a week in hospital at the age of 28. He was first convicted of "public defiling of the national flags of China" in 1998 in a peaceful demonstration on January 1, during which he paraded "defiled" national flags and tied them in front of the government office. Ng was conditionally released after being convicted of desecrating
two miniature national and regional flags in an incident that was generally considered to be of no threat to public order. It was the first conviction under post-handover laws which place restrictions on non-violent expression of protest.? Since then, Ng had been to a number of protests that eventually resulted in a jail term of 7 days earlier this year. |
