Statement by Leung Kwok-hung

June 1, 2000

I have requested some candles and a black arm-band to commemorate June 4, but the prison authority has refused to give them to me. They say this is not political, but purely administrative.

I do not particularly protest against the prison authority here, but I do feel that the SAR Government is to blame for taking away my rights to pay homage to the victims of June 4.

So I have decided to stop eating for one day on June 4. This is not to protest against the rejection of my request, but to page homage to those who died on June 4, 1989.

I beseech all people to attend the vigil on Sunday. I will be there in spirit.
